Have you ever heard the phrase, “Instant Karma’s going to get you?”
It speaks to the idea that whatever you do will come back to you.
Michele Doman, who is serving with her husband in the Tuxtla Gutierrez Mission in Mexico, has come to understand this principle in an amazing way.
The Doman’s just completed one year of service in Mexico, and it was a FULL year to say the least.
This brief description of year 1 might make you dizzy: 86 Zone Conferences, 1,300 interviews, 5,292 Book of Mormons ordered, along with 1,248 pizzas. 🙂
The next two years in Mexico will also be jam-packed with craziness, and full of excitement, worry, joy and sadness.
For Michelle, it is helpful to have time to unwind and feel at peace. One of these healing times is when she has the opportunity on occasion to walk on the beach.
What is she looking for on these walks?
Well, besides the peace, she collects seashells.
At first, these walks would discourage her because of the amount of garbage that she saw littered on the sandy beach.
Then, Michele had an idea. She would take two bags with her on her strolls on the beach. One bag for the seashells, and one bag for trash, “thinking in my mind if the ocean sees I love it, it will send me beautiful shells.”
She realizes that may seem a little crazy, but in her own words, “It always happens!”
“Sometimes I forget an extra bag and I would still find some [shells] just not great ones. But today, one year into our mission I went out with two bags in hand as I picked up a piece of garbage and like a magic act, a few feet away would be the most beautiful shell.”
As she finished up her latest walk on the beach, Michele thought about how powerful it would be if we would all do this every day. Just pick up the little pieces of garbage wherever we find them in our lives, and then know that God will provide a beautiful shell for us to find.
Michele’s story reminds me of one of my favorite Book of Mormon verses, that reads:
For that which ye do send out shall return unto you again, and be restored
As we are willing to send out positivity into the world, as we seek to bless, and serve, and reach out, those same offerings we give are returned unto us. Doctrine and Covenants section 130 teaches, “There is a law, irrevocably decreed in heaven before the foundations of this world, upon which all blessings are predicated—And when we obtain any blessing from God, it is by obedience to that law upon which it is predicated.”
The world may call it karma, but it’s a divine principle called restoration. It’s spoken of in the Book of Mormon, and it’s mentioned in the Bible in the book of Galatians 6:7,” Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.”
I’m grateful for some seashells by the seashore that reminded me of this powerful principle. Seek to clean up the garbage wherever you find it, and be the change you want to see in the world. As you do, the Lord will change you and return unto you the good you have done unto others.
