Summer at 12 – My Season of Discovery

Summer at 12 – My Season of Discovery

If you ask my Mom, she’ll be the first to tell you that my life changed when I was 12 years old. It happened when I read The Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ, cover to cover for the first time.

When I discovered the power behind reading The Book of Mormon

It all began when my friend Irving and I set a goal to read The Book of Mormon in one month during the summer. Irving finished in less than three weeks and I took the full month, reading about 15 pages per day. Growing up, I regularly read The Book of Mormon in the evenings with my family. I had a love for The Book of Mormon, but hadn’t yet taken an honest look at the book from cover to cover. During my month of reading The Book of Mormon I carried my copy of the book almost everywhere I went. I read a page here and there, in between playing with my friends. Sometimes I’d take a half hour and just sit and study The Book of Mormon.

How I felt as I studied The Book of Mormon

As I read The Book of Mormon, I began to feel swelling motions of peace. I felt my mind begin to open to ponder the meaning of life. I felt inspiration distill on my mind and my understanding open. I began to feel a more real connection with heaven. I felt a personal relationship and confidence grow between myself and the Lord. As I began to feel a spiritual transformation take place within me, I began to desire to do more good, and give up my bad habits. I eventually threw away some inappropriate movies and video games I had. The bad media I once felt comfortable with, I now felt offended by. The reason I felt offended by violent, vulgar or immoral media, was because it weakened my connection with God the Father, His Son Jesus Christ, and The Holy Ghost.

Looking back on reading The Book of Mormon

Now that I’m 24, it’s been over 10 years since I first read the Book of Mormon from cover to cover. Since then I’ve read The Book of Mormon about ten times. Each time I read The Book of Mormon again I gain new insights and feel closer to the Lord. I’ve never regretted taking the time to read The Book of Mormon. The first time I read it I was oblivious to just how big a change was taking place in my life. But now with the passing of time, it’s clear to me, my friends and family just how big of a change reading the book has made in my life. I’m happier. I have more control over my emotions. I feel closer to God.

My invitation

For anyone who has not read The Book of Mormon, I invite you to read it. For anyone who has read it, I invite you to read it again. When it comes to reading The Book of Mormon, you can’t go wrong. Read it with an open heart and you will grow closer to God.

About Me

I served my mission in Neuquen, Argentina.  I received my Bachelor’s degree in Communications from BYU.  I have a wonderful wife and son.  After my mission I felt impressed to focus my efforts on creating mission prep resources for future missionaries.  I’ve now been working on the Prepare to Serve project for just over a year and plan to dedicate our time to it for at least a few more years.
